Had games been on dvd would have made people question the validity of the format for games. Some of the first ps3 games could have been on dvd but that would have undermined the format goal sony set forth.

Only real difference between then and now when it came to software was the first gen ps2 games were on mix of cd and dvd. PS3 was like that as well, being the cheapest bluray player. I remember the countless stories from IGN and daily radar about thousands of people buying the ps2 strictly because it was the cheapest dvd player. MS picked up where sega stumbled but because of deeper pockets, can keep themselves in the game longer. somewhat pioneered online play with a modem in every box, was easier to develop for, the games were somewhat indistinguishable when both first came out.įunny how things go. The only thing sony didnt count on was it would be MS this time around instead of Sega.

PS3 has a movie format to push it and backing from the name sony and thousands of fans from the previous gen. It was also coming off a banner system in the PS1. Not to mention the big name of Sony to spread the hype. You figure when looking back at the DC/PS2, the ps2 had the movie format dvd to help sell it.
